About this event
Very soon we will enjoy garments and wearables that are mass-produced but personalized based on our unique body shapes and needs. Examples from the academic world and industry confirm this trend – eyewear, lingerie, shoes can already be produced for unique bodies of wearers. While these developments are exciting, up until now little attention was paid to wearers’ experiences during body data collection. For example, some studies suggest that 3D body scanning (technology that allows to capture wearer’s body geometry and use it for product personalization) can negatively affect people who experience it. In fact, some people find viewing their 3D visualization a shocking experience. In this talk we will share insights from the study we run at the Eindhoven University of Technology and our vision on technological developments that will make personal data collection a comfortable process.

About this event
The domain of Wearables challenges to design technology with a heightened sensitivity to touch, emotion, aesthetics, dignity and experience of personal identity. In this presentation by Jessica Smarsch, we looked at wearable technologies, specifically in the realm of health & well-being and as a transition from hard to soft, not only in terms of materials, but also as an approach and way of designing the user experience.
Jessica Smarsch is a designer with a background in textile design. After receiving a Masters in Social Design from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2015, she began focusing her work towards health and well-being. With a particular interest in health as a matter of the body and the mind, she began to narrow her work in 2017 towards stroke rehabilitation and has been working in this domain since. She is currently developing a sensor garment and app for home rehabilitation.
